Why is Defensive Driving in Japan so Special?

Defensive driving is simply caring for other people on the road – as well as yourself. It is all about avoiding accidents, and doing it together with your fellow travelers. Helping each other drive carefully, and to be careful when it comes to pedestrians, is the key to defensive driving. But it is also part of the problem.
Japan is a very crowded place. There are many streets where you can hardly squeeze in a car - and they are full of pedestrians, bicycles, motorbikes, and other users of the road. The speed limit is low. But even when it is moving slowly a car is dangerous.
It is up to you as a driver to be careful about the other people on the road. And that is what defensive driving is about. The Japanese way.
